James Beaudry is one of the founding members of Maine Sports Legends. He was Director of Athletics at St. Francis College for 21 years, and was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. He coached baseball, basketball, soccer, cross country and golf at St. Francis before it became the University of New England.
Jim’s daughter, Maryann, was captain of the girls’ basketball team at Biddeford High and a member of the outdoor track team. She captured three gold and one silver medal when the 1981 track team won the state championship. She also tried out and made the boys’ golf team as a senior.
She captained the basketball team at Adelphi University her junior ans senior years, was the team’s leading scorer and wasnamed to four all star tournament teams and the team’s Most Valuable Player her senior year.
After graduation she played in the New York City Professional Women’s League for a team sponsored by the National Football League. The team won the city championship three years in a row, going undefeated in one season.
The Most Valuable Player Award at Adelphi is named in her honor.In April of 1992, Maryann and her mother, Joan, lost their lives in an auto accident on the Maine Turnpike caused by a driver going the wrong way.
